Maison Julien’s garden
Maison Julien Miyazu. French restaurant and wellness centre.

Maison Julien Miyazu is the realization of a dream: to give a second life to a traditional Japanese house. But I didn’t want to create a false life, a museum display case that we visit like a piece of fossilized past, in the silence and respect that we give to the dead; I dreamed of a true rebirth.

The world has changed, we can no longer recreate the past but we can ensure that the essential values of the past are transmitted to the present. I wanted to show new generations that all it takes is a little imagination to resurrect these masterpieces and inhabit them.
We would be incapable of building these houses today, so our mission is to ensure that they are preserved by providing them with our current technologies and concepts of housing.

We may not realize it, but these buildings in which craftsmen of the past have invested all their know-how and all their heart are real living beings. They are waiting for us to save them from disappearing.
I think that this house in Miyazu has been waiting for us for years. That is probably why without even visiting it, after seeing a few photos, we fell in love with her and left France to answer the call.

And here it is, all spiffy, more beautiful than ever, thanks to all the craftmen who also felt somehow that they were contributing to something important. Come and discover this ageless lady, she is waiting for you to experience a moment out of time, for a massage, a meal or a tea with some delicacies…

And the message she will convey to is “Look and know that as was my case, there are a lot of soulfull places of my kind in the Japanese countryside waiting to be revived…”

Patrice Julien.

The Chef

Maison Julien Miyazu
Maison Julien Miyazu

From childhood, thanks to the influence of his mother, a painter and fine “cordon bleu”, Patrice Julien felt a love for beautiful and good things. After several years in teaching and then in diplomacy, at the age of forty, he decided to radically change direction and “enter the kitchen”

It was the publication in Japan of his first book of family French cooking recipes, followed by the second one that introduced the Japanese to Le Creuset Cocottes that convinced him to devote himself as a professional to his two passions: art and gastronomy.

After the rapid success of his first place, the “Centre Français des Arts” in Tokyo, a private house in the Shirokanedai district in 1994, he then created “Le Jardin de Julien” in the experimental Department Store of the Tokyu group “Queens East” in Yokohama, followed by “Jardin de Julien &BIS” in Ebisu, then the Bar Dining “Shyuen” in Nishi Azabu still in Tokyo, “Maison de Campagne” in Kobe and Le “Menu de La Maman” in Osaka in collaboration with the System 14 Company.

Patrice is a chef, but he is also a creator of atmospheres. Each of the establishments he designs must have a different personality. For him, gastronomy is about taste in every sense of the word. The taste of the dishes must be good, but the place must also be tasteful. For him, in a restaurant, we do not only come to eat but to live a unique experience. To this end, all the details are important.

In terms of food spirit, Patrice Julien aims for simplicity and respect for the product. From his experience of living in several countries, he has brought back memories, influences, atmospheres that he wants to share. If his cuisine is often transcultural, it is the French Mediterranean that dominates, hence, among other things, an exclusive choice of Occitanie wines for the wine list.

He also wished to pay tribute to the specific characteristics of Tango, the region where ‘Maison Julien Miyazu’ is based, and so he chose to use local resources as a priority, including for the Sakés selected in the drink list.

Tea Time

‘Tea time is not a vital necessity, so it has to be a moment of sharing and happiness, a kind of ritual that should nourish the heart and mind.
For this special moment, Patrice and Yuri have selected the teas they used in their guest house in the South of France. They all come from Damann Frères, a famous Parisian tea brand founded in 1825.

With your tea, coffee or old-fashioned chocolate (cold or hot), you will choose between the chef’s special crêpes, scones served with jam made from local seasonal fruits.
or Our Chefs cake of the day.

Tea time at Maison Julien
Served from 15:00 to 17:00
(By reservation only, at least 2 days in advance)
